You can evaluate several amazon hogwarts amazon kindle colorsoft alternatives if you need different hardware specifications. The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16GB combines a glare-free Colorsoft color display, an adjustable warm light, and a waterproof chassis weighing 7.52 ounces. Its system offers 16GB of internal storage and built-in parental controls. These features deliver a focused reading environment without notifications, games, or video diversions.
You might still want different hardware features for specific reading needs. You may prefer physical page-turn buttons, multimedia playback for audio and video, or a spacious 10.2-inch panel equipped with a stylus for writing. Other readers may prefer an ultralight 5.57-ounce monochrome display that maximizes battery life up to ten weeks, or an option from another brand. These 6 alternatives were chosen because their specs overlap with the original Kindle Colorsoft Kids in storage capacity, physical dimensions, screen lighting, or reading-first software setups.
How Each Alternative Compares
GOWENIC 7-Inch Kids Color E-Reader
The GOWENIC 7-Inch Kids Color E-Reader includes multimedia support for video and audio playback, expandable storage beyond its built-in 16GB, and dedicated physical page-turn buttons set into an ABS outer shell. By contrast, the Kindle Colorsoft Kids intentionally omits audio, video, and apps to provide a focused reading environment. However, the GOWENIC device delivers up to 20 hours of reading battery life and lacks waterproofing. The Colorsoft Kids adds a fully waterproof exterior, an adjustable warm light, and integrated parental controls via the Parent Dashboard. Choose the GOWENIC if you want physical buttons, expandable storage, and multimedia entertainment alongside color reading rather than a dedicated, waterproof book reader.
Amazon Kindle 6-Inch 16GB E-Reader
The Amazon Kindle 6-Inch 16GB E-Reader provides an ultralight footprint at 5.57 ounces and measures 6.21 by 4.27 inches, making it notably more compact than the 7.52-ounce Colorsoft Kids. It provides 16GB of storage and up to 6 weeks of battery life in a standard black finish. To achieve this lightweight profile, it gives up the color display, trading it for standard monochrome reading. You also miss out on the Colorsoft's waterproof rating, adjustable warm front light, included kid-friendly protective cover, and Amazon Kids+ features. You should pick this 6-inch model if you prioritize minimal carrying weight and compact dimensions over color book illustrations and water resistance.
Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 7" 16GB
The standard Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 7-Inch 16GB shares the same core hardware as the Colorsoft Kids edition, including model number SA58CB, dimensions of 6.96 by 5.02 by 0.3 inches, and a 7.52-ounce waterproof build. Both deliver color page rendering, 16GB of storage, and an adjustable warm light. The difference lies in packaging and software inclusions: this standard version arrives in a plain black casing without the themed kid cover, 12 months of Amazon Kids+, or the 2-year worry-free guarantee. It is rated for up to 8 weeks of battery life. Choose this version if you want the waterproof color display for adult reading without child-centric accessories or subscriptions.
Amazon Kindle Scribe 10.2" 16GB (Like-New)
The Amazon Kindle Scribe features a significantly larger 10.2-inch front-lit monochrome display and includes a battery-free Premium Pen stylus for on-screen note-taking and markups. Measuring 9.06 by 7.72 inches with a slim 0.23-inch profile, it offers far more screen space than the 7-inch Colorsoft Kids. However, the Scribe weighs roughly double at 15.3 ounces, lacks water resistance, and does not show color illustrations. It also does not come with the 12-month Amazon Kids+ subscription or child-oriented parental controls. Select the Kindle Scribe if you need an expansive reading area and digital pen input for writing notes rather than a waterproof, kid-focused color e-reader.
Amazon Kindle 6-Inch 16 GB (Refurbished)
The refurbished Amazon Kindle 6-Inch 16GB gives you a compact 4.27 by 6.21-inch form factor that weighs just 5.57 ounces, making it noticeably lighter than the 7.52-ounce Colorsoft Kids. It matches the 16GB storage capacity and delivers up to 6 weeks of battery life, backed by a limited warranty. Compared to the Colorsoft Kids, it sacrifices color rendering for a black-and-white display and lacks waterproof construction and warm light adjustment. It also omits the bundled child cover and Amazon Kids+ access. Choose this refurbished 6-inch model if you want a lightweight, pocket-sized e-reader for monochrome text and do not require water resistance or color graphics.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 6.8" 16 GB
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 6.8-Inch 16GB features a sharp 300 ppi glare-free screen and provides up to 10 weeks of battery life, surpassing the 8-week battery rating of the Colorsoft line. It includes USB-C connectivity, waterproof durability, and an adjustable warm light in a 7.2-ounce black chassis measuring 6.85 by 4.9 inches. However, the Paperwhite display is strictly optimized for black-and-white reading, foregoing the Colorsoft's color image output. It also leaves out the child-friendly case and bundled Amazon Kids+ subscription. You should select the Paperwhite if you want extended 10-week battery life and high-resolution monochrome contrast for books without needing color display capabilities.

Frequently asked questions
What is the hardware difference between the standard Kindle Colorsoft and the Kids edition?
The standard Amazon Kindle Colorsoft and the Kids edition share the identical SA58CB hardware platform. Both feature 16GB of storage, weigh 7.52 ounces, and measure 5.02 by 6.96 inches with a 0.3-inch thickness. The primary differences lie in exterior styling and software setup, as the Kids edition comes in a Harry Potter finish with built-in parental management tools, whereas the standard edition comes in Black.
Which Kindle alternative offers the longest battery life?
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 6.8-Inch provides the longest battery duration on this list, offering up to 10 weeks of reading time. By comparison, the Kindle Colorsoft reaches up to 8 weeks, the standard 6-inch Kindle runs for up to 6 weeks, and the GOWENIC model lasts up to 20 hours. The Paperwhite pairs this runtime with a glare-free 300 ppi monochrome screen and USB-C connectivity.
Which Kindle alternative is the lightest option for travel?
The Amazon Kindle 6-Inch 16GB is the lightest option available, weighing just 5.57 ounces. It features a compact frame measuring 4.27 inches wide, 6.21 inches long, and 0.32 inches thick. This makes it noticeably lighter than the 7.52-ounce Kindle Colorsoft Kids. You still get 16GB of internal storage and up to 6 weeks of battery life inside this pocket-sized monochrome reader.
Can you take handwritten notes on any of these alternative reading devices?
You can write notes directly on the Amazon Kindle Scribe 10.2-Inch, which includes a battery-free Premium Pen stylus. Unlike standard reading-only Kindles or color e-readers, the Scribe features built-in digital note tools alongside a spacious 10.2-inch front-lit panel. This 15.3-ounce model gives you 16GB of onboard storage for both your reading library and dedicated notebook markup tasks.
How does the Kindle Paperwhite screen size compare to the Kindle Colorsoft?
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite features a 6.8-inch display, which is slightly smaller than the 7-inch display found on the Kindle Colorsoft. The Paperwhite provides a sharp 300 ppi black-and-white screen with an adjustable warm light in a 7.2-ounce body. In contrast, the Colorsoft provides a full color viewing display and weighs 7.52 ounces, while maintaining a similar physical footprint.
Are all Kindle Colorsoft alternatives waterproof?
No, waterproofing is not standard across all Kindle Colorsoft alternatives. While the Kindle Paperwhite 6.8-Inch and the standard Kindle Colorsoft match the waterproof build of the Kindle Colorsoft Kids, other models do not specify water resistance. Devices like the standard Kindle 6-Inch, the Kindle Scribe, and the GOWENIC 7-Inch lack listed waterproof ratings, so you must keep them away from water.
Do any of the Kindle alternatives offer expandable storage?
Only the GOWENIC 7-Inch offers expandable storage among the alternatives on this list. Every Amazon Kindle model, including the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle Scribe, comes with a fixed 16GB internal capacity that cannot be expanded. If you require additional room beyond the onboard 16GB for multimedia files, the GOWENIC is the only model with that specific hardware capability.
