Looking Beyond the Amazon Kindle Kids 6-Inch 16GB? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

How each alternative compares

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB 7-inch

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB 7-inch offers a larger 7-inch screen compared to the 6-inch display on the Kindle Kids model. This provides more reading area for text-heavy books. It shares the same 16GB storage capacity. The Paperwhite is waterproof, adding durability for bath or poolside reading. You give up the child-specific parental controls and the included 2-year warranty found with the Kids edition. This device suits older teens or adults who want a bigger screen and waterproofing without the kid-focused interface. It is a practical upgrade for readers prioritizing screen real estate and battery life over child safety features.

Amazon Kindle 16GB 6-Inch E-Reader

The standard Amazon Kindle 16GB 6-Inch E-Reader matches the 6-inch screen size and 16GB storage of the Kindle Kids model. It is slightly lighter at 5.29 ounces and thinner at 0.27 inches compared to the Kids version. You lose the kid-proof cover, the 2-year worry-free guarantee, and the built-in parental dashboard controls. This model is ideal for readers who want the most portable, distraction-free text experience. It lacks the specific durability and content curation tools designed for children. If you do not need the warranty or parental settings, this is a slim, lightweight alternative for focused reading.

Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Kids (16GB)

The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16GB features a color E Ink display, a significant upgrade from the grayscale screen on the standard Kindle Kids. It is larger at 6.96 inches long and weighs 7.52 ounces. This device is waterproof and designed for illustrated content like graphic novels. You trade the compact 6-inch form factor for a bigger, heavier device. The color screen consumes more battery, though it remains efficient for reading. This alternative is best for young readers who engage with color comics and illustrated books. It provides the same distraction-free environment but adds visual richness for visual learners and fans of colored graphic content.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids 7-Inch

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids 7-Inch provides a larger 7-inch glare-free display compared to the 6-inch screen on the base Kids model. It shares the 16GB storage and includes parental controls and the 2-year warranty. The device is waterproof, offering better durability for active children. It is heavier and larger, weighing 7.52 ounces and measuring 6.96 inches long. This model suits kids who benefit from a bigger screen for easier reading or those who read in varied environments. It keeps the distraction-free focus but adds waterproofing and more screen real estate. It is a robust choice for older children or those who need a larger display.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB Essentials Bundle

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB Essentials Bundle includes a 7-inch display, matching the larger screen of the Paperwhite Kids model rather than the 6-inch base. It offers 16GB of storage and includes parental controls. The bundle format suggests added accessories, though specific items are not detailed in the specs. It is waterproof and designed for focused reading. You gain a larger screen and potential accessory bundle compared to the base Kids model. This option is ideal for parents seeking a complete, worry-free package. It maintains the distraction-free environment while providing a bigger display and enhanced durability through waterproofing for children aged 3 to 12.

Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16GB Bundle

The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16GB Bundle features a color E Ink display, differing from the grayscale screen on the standard Kindle Kids. It is larger and heavier, measuring 6.96 inches long and weighing 7.52 ounces. The bundle likely includes accessories, providing a complete package. It offers waterproof durability and parental controls. You trade the compact 6-inch size for a bigger, colorful device. This alternative is best for families wanting a complete, colorful reading solution. It supports illustrated content and provides the same distraction-free experience. The color screen enhances engagement for graphic novels and comics, making it suitable for visual learners who need a durable, subscription-ready device.
