Our top pick: Kobo Libra Colour 7" Color E-Reader.
Comparing the Top Alternative Color Readers
Kobo Libra Colour 7-Inch E-Reader
This specific package shares the 7-inch Kaleido 3 color screen, 32GB storage, and IPX8 waterproofing of the original. It highlights dedicated audiobook features and dark mode display settings out of the box under model number N428-KU-WH-K-CK. While the core hardware matches the original 7.05-ounce chassis, it explicitly targets listeners who toggle between text and spoken audio. You do not gain extra internal storage or bundled accessories over the standard model. You should choose this variation if you want a confirmed audiobook-capable color reader with physical buttons and dark mode reading support for mixed-format daily use.
Kobo Libra Colour 7-Inch eReader with Clear Case
This option bundles the base 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour hardware with an included clear protective case. You get the same Kaleido 3 color screen, IPX8 waterproofing, physical turn buttons, and dark mode features as the standalone unit. The included shell shields the exterior immediately, saving you from sourcing a separate protective cover. However, this bundle includes a basic clear case rather than a folding stand or dedicated stylus slot. You also do not receive stylus hardware in the package. You should choose this package if you want out-of-the-box scratch and drop defense for your 7-inch color reading without spending extra time tracking down compatible basic covers.
The PocketBook Era Color matches the original 7-inch Kaleido 3 display size, 32GB storage, and IPX8 water resistance, but adds onboard audio capabilities. It features built-in speakers and integrated text-to-speech, allowing you to listen to books directly from the reader without connecting external headphones. You also get Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity in a Stormy Sea finish. However, you give up Kobo-native software integration, such as integrated OverDrive library borrowing and Kobo Stylus 2 markup features. Pick the PocketBook Era Color if you want built-in speaker playback and automated text-to-speech reading on a waterproof 7-inch color display instead of relying strictly on external audio gear.
Kobo Libra Colour 7" E-Reader with SleepCover
This configuration provides the standard 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour reader bundled with a Butter Yellow SleepCover. Unlike the standalone original device, this package incorporates an integrated folding cover that doubles as a hands-free reading stand. You retain the IPX8 waterproof rating, Kaleido 3 color screen, dark mode, and physical page-turn buttons. The bundled case protects the screen during transport and props the unit up on desks. What you give up compared to note-oriented packages is integrated stylus storage or an included stylus pen. Choose this setup if you want hands-free tabletop reading and screen protection right away without buying an aftermarket stand cover.
Kobo Libra Colour 7" SleepCover Bundle
This bundle pairs the 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour eReader with a specialized Notebook SleepCover. While the base reader still delivers the Kaleido 3 color screen, IPX8 waterproofing, and physical turn buttons, the included case adds dedicated stylus storage alongside folding stand support. That makes keeping a writing tool secure much simpler than on the unbundled original unit. However, the bundle only supplies the notebook-style housing; it does not include the active stylus itself, which remains a separate acquisition. You should choose this bundle if you plan to use digital handwriting features and want a purpose-built cover that holds both the tablet and an optional stylus securely together.
The Bigme B7 upgrades internal capacity to 64GB of expandable storage and 4GB RAM, running on the open Android 14 platform. It includes both a stylus pen and a protective case in the box, whereas the original Kobo requires buying the stylus separately. At 6.17 ounces, it is also lighter than the 7.05-ounce Kobo Libra Colour. What you give up is Kobo’s certified IPX8 waterproof rating and integrated OverDrive borrowing software. Choose the Bigme 7-inch model if you require the flexibility of Android apps, double the onboard file storage, and bundled writing hardware straight out of the package.
